Red thyme essential oil has a multitude of uses as a natural remedy. The pure essence of the herb is captured in essential oil by carbon dioxide extraction. The resultant liquid is orange in colour, has a light to medium consistency and offers a medium to strong middle note aroma best described as warming, aromatic, sharp and woody.
Red thyme essential oil blends especially well with bergamot, grapefruit, lemon, lavender, rosemary and pine.
Historically, thyme was widely used by the ancient Greeks, Egyptians and Romans as a herbal medicine; commonly burned as incense in Greek temples and also used for embalming purposes. During the Middle Ages, the herb was imbibed by jousting knights in the belief that it enhanced their courage, while a sprig of thyme was often carried to ward off pestilence.
